Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the sick is a sacrament that is offered to those undergoing serious illness or people who have grown weak under the burden of years. In our parish, if you wish to be anointed, please call the Parish Office at (046) 9546488 and the priest will arrange a convenient time to visit you in your home, nursing home or hospital.

In the time of Jesus, if people were asked who was the man Jesus, they would respond that he is the healer ! From the Gospels it is clear to see that Jesus spent much of his time with those who were sick or unwell, through his life and his love he healed many.  The Sacrament of the Sick is a healing sacrament.  It is available to us when we are seriously ill, advanced in age or when anxiety or worry may overtake us.

In his Letter, St James instructs us that “anyone of you who is ill should send for the priests of the church, and they must anoint the sick person with oil in the name of the Lord and pray over them. The prayer of faith will save the sick person and the Lord will raise them up again; and if they have committed any sins they will be forgiven” (James 5:14-15)

The Final Blessing

The final blessing which we give following the reception of the anointing of the sick is:

May God the Father bless you.

May God the Son heal you.

May God the Holy Spirit enlighten you.

May God protect you from harm and grant you salvation.

May he shine on your heart and lead you to eternal life.
